There is a particular kind of admin in reapplying lipstick four times before lunch. You blot, you top up, and by four o'clock the colour has wandered somewhere it was never meant to go.
Now picture the other version. You wake up and your lips already look finished. Still yours, just warmer, tidier at the edges, the sort of thing people read as a good night's sleep rather than good makeup.
That is lip blush, and it has quietly become one of the most requested treatments at our Rawdon clinic. It does not make lips bigger. It makes them look like the best version of themselves before you have been near a mirror.
I will be blunt about the reputation problem, because clients raise it first. Semi-permanent lip work earned a rough name in the 2000s, when it meant a hard dark outline drawn a shade beyond the natural border. This is not that. Done well, the colour is soft and built around your own tone, and nobody can tell. They just think you look well.
The compliment I hear most after lip blush is not about lips at all. It is people asking whether you have been away somewhere.
THE TREATMENT
What lip blush actually is
Lip blush is semi-permanent makeup. A very fine needle places cosmetic pigment into the top layers of the lip, shading colour through the body of the lip rather than drawing a line around it. That distinction is everything. Shading is what makes it look like your lips on a very good day. Lining is what made your aunt's lips look like they had been outlined in felt tip.
The appointment runs to about two hours, and most of the early part is talking rather than tattooing. We pick the pigment together against your natural lip tone, then map the shape, correcting asymmetry and redefining a border that has softened over the years. Numbing cream goes on first. Most clients describe a warm buzzing, and a few have dozed off in the chair.
WHAT IT TREATS
What lip blush is brilliant for
It solves a narrow set of problems extremely well.
Pale or washed-out lips. If your lips vanish into your face without makeup, tone is the fix, not volume.
A border that has softened. Definition fades with age long before size does, and a redrawn edge reads as youthful in a way that is hard to place. It works alongside lip filler or entirely without it.
Asymmetry. One side fuller, one corner lower. Pigment balances what the eye picks up before anyone can name it.
Small scars or gaps in the lip line, which take pigment beautifully.
A mouth that turns down at rest. Colour placed with care lifts the read of the corners, and down-turned smile treatment or marionette line filler takes it further.
Life without a mirror. Gym, holidays, the school run, night shifts, wedding mornings. The colour is simply there.
Anyone who does not want injectables. Plenty of clients book blush because they have decided filler is not for them, and I will never talk you out of that.

Two sessions is the standard plan, not a sign that anything went wrong. The first lays the foundation, the second perfects it. Skipping that second appointment is the most common reason people end up underwhelmed by blush done elsewhere.
Wedding, milestone birthday or a big December? Book your first lip blush session at least ten weeks ahead, so the top-up is done and the colour has settled before the day.
Day one is not your result. Week six is your result. Everything in between is just your lips getting on with it.

What lip blush pairs with
Blush is rarely the only thing on the plan, and the combinations are where the good work happens.
If you already have lip filler, we leave about four weeks so the lip is calm and the shape has settled before pigment goes in. Planning both from scratch? A lip flip shows a touch more upper lip without adding volume, which makes it the neatest partner to blush. If your smile shows more gum than you would like, gummy smile treatment sorts the frame around the mouth. For the skin itself, a skin booster such as Profhilo improves the crepey texture above the lip that no pigment will hide.
One practical point. A hydrofacial or one of our luxury facials a fortnight beforehand, plus daily balm, gives the pigment a smoother surface to sit in.

Worth saying plainly: blush will not make small lips big. Overfilled lips age a face. Well judged colour does the opposite, and it costs the mouth nothing in movement.

Does lip blush hurt?
Less than people expect. Strong numbing cream goes on before we begin and is topped up through the session, so most clients describe a warm vibration rather than pain. If you have sat through lip filler, this is easier. Come and talk it through at a free consultation.
How long does lip blush last?
Usually one to three years, depending on your skin type, sun exposure, smoking and how much acid or retinol you use around the mouth. Oilier skin fades a little faster. It softens gradually rather than dropping off a cliff, so you choose when to refresh it. Book a refresh whenever the colour stops doing the work for you.
Will it look too dark?
Not once it has healed. Day one is deliberately stronger, because a good portion of the pigment leaves during peeling, and by week four you are left with a soft wash of colour. We choose the shade together, and I would always rather add depth at your top-up than go too bold first time.
Can I have lip blush if I have already had lip filler?
Yes, and many of our clients have both. We leave around four weeks after filler so the shape is final before pigment goes in. Starting from scratch, blush first and filler afterwards is usually the better order. Bring your history to a consultation and we will build the sequence around your diary.
What is the aftercare?
Simple. Balm on, hands off. Keep them moisturised, resist picking the flakes, and skip the gym, saunas, swimming and spicy food for a few days. No lip makeup for about a week, then SPF keeps the colour true for longer. Our FAQs cover the rest, and you leave with everything written down.
